On a Sunday morning fifteen years ago, shortly after returning from a trip to Haiti, I left Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte, with Dr. James Howell’s sermon still ringing in my ears. It went
something like this: “Many of God’s children need you and they need you now. They can’t wait for you to retire, or to get a better house, or another new car. They need you now!”

So, Sunday afternoon, I sat down with my calculator and by Sunday evening I had proved it was not
possible to start a non-profit from scratch. I picked up the novel I had been reading. Suddenly a very clear and distinctive voice was interrupting my reading. I put the book down. This is what I heard, “I
have shown you my children, whom I love. I have shown you my partners, whom I trust. Why don’t you let me worry about the numbers.”
The following day with the support of friends; Bruce Bailey, Dow Bauknight, Jim Blane, Chris Cecil, David Nichols and many others, we set out to join Actionnel Fleurisma, the founder of OFCB, in his mission to offer education and opportunity for young people in mountains of Bayonnais.

When this photo was taken in November 2008, these beautiful kindergarteners could barely reach their desks. Today, with support from hundreds of generous and loving sponsors, these little girls have had the opportunity to graduate from one of the finest high schools in Haiti.

Thanks to all who have helped along the way, and thanks to Actionnel who had the vision and courage more than thirty years ago, thanks to Melissa Hoffmann, Ewo’s Executive Director for her commitment to continue the work, and thanks be to the God who loves every one of his children… and remember… “Many of God’s children need you and they need you now.”
