Discovery Day

Looking back to the past, did you know that December 5th is one of the historics days for Haitian people?

December 5th of 1492 is the day after a long trip began on August 3rd of 1492 where the famous navigator Christoph Colombus and the crew of his three caravelles landed to the northwest of the current island of Haiti which was named Hispaniola . At that time the natives called it Haiti (creole:Ayiti), Quisqueya or bohio (creole: kiskeya ou Boyo).

Christoph found new lands where he met new people. He thought that he had arrived in India, his intended destination, so he called all the new people “Indians”. So, he also managed to discover this new land that is Haiti now. December 5th is an important day for Haitians because it was that day where we would have the name of “Haiti”. We call this day, “Discovery Day.” This day reminds us where our country’s name comes from and our History.

According to Nondy Sagis, one of the history teachers in ICB high school is thinking of meeting all the primary students on December 5th to talk to them about the importance of this date and what it means for us as Haitian.
