How is the country of Haiti doing?

Many people have been asking about the condition in which Haitians have been living since the 7th of July 2021. It’s a fair question since most information comes only from Port Au Prince. However, we are not in a position to talk about the entire country of Haiti. We would rather paraphrase the question into:  “How is Bayonnais doing?”

If Bayonnais weren’t a part of Haiti, we would have said that Bayonnais is doing great. Birds are singing. Dogs are barking (mostly at night!). Donkeys are making their usual noises. Roosters are waking people up at night. The Bayonnais Villagers keep doing their own things as usual! Women are going to the local market in Chappelle, as well as going to other open markets like L’Estere, Poteau, Gonaives, Desdunes. Men go to their fields with their hoes planting peanuts, corn, beans, rice and others.

Special classes started on Monday the 2nd of August for 9th (156 students), 12th (119 students) and 13th (82 students) grades.  They are learning Philosophy, English, Mathematics, Geology, French, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, History, Creole and Spanish.  We have a strict schedule to follow so that they will be ready for National Exams in July of 2022.

Bayonnais is doing great – there have been no crimes here. Kids are out playing together. Kidnapping is not something to worry about here in Bayonnais. Gunshots are not an issue. Giant piles of trash are NOT an issue.

If Port Au Prince weren’t the Headquarters where all Haiti’s resources are located, we would have responded that Bayonnais is doing great. Truly great.

But, fuel is kept in Port Au Prince. To catch a flight, you must go to Port Au Prince. All the wholesalers are established in Port Au Prince. The electricity for the entire country is located and distributed from Port Au Prince. Because everything is in Port Au Prince, more than 50% of the Haitian population have been severely facing hunger and starvation.

Everything has become scarce, and the cost for everything has become exponentially high, more than twice it’s normal prices. We are not sure if the assassination of President Jovenel Moise has truly made things worse over here.  When he was alive, these issues were not a high priority of his.

Bayonnais has been doing its best. People are still smiling at each other and growing stronger together everyday.
